Historic Courthouse Turns 150

Through the invitation of Mr. Ryan Collins, father of 3rd grader Alexis and preschooler Preston Collins, member of the Washington County Historical Society board and social studies teacher in Mahtomedi school district,  7th Grade students in Ms. Santo’s history class recently wrote letters to themselves, reflecting on what life is like in Stillwater today and making educated guesses of what life will be like 50 years from now. The letters, along with other artifacts representing life in 2017, will be buried in a time capsule on Saturday, June 3 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Washington County Historical Courthouse, located just a couple of blocks from SCCS.  The public is invited to the festivities, starting at 9:00 am and continuing throughout the day. The capsule will be on display from 11:00 – 1:00, with the actual burial ceremony taking place at 1:45 pm.

7th Grade students, Isabella Scanlon, Danny Valerius, Jackson Westerhaus, and Elliana Doll presented St. Croix Catholic’s binder of letters to Mr. Collins on behalf of the class.  Mr. Collins commented, “I presented the binder with the letters from the middle school to the committee.  They absolutely loved them!  One of the members started to read a few and she said she could read them all night long.  I was told by a few other members that the student portion is the most meaningful addition to the time capsule.  Thank you for your participation in this project.  Looking back, it was such a unique opportunity and I'm glad it worked out for all of us.  I hope there is this kind of excitement in 50 years when it is opened.”
