SCCS Chamber Ensemble Travels to Duluth
This past weekend, St. Croix Catholic’s Chamber Ensemble participated in an exchange performance with Ordean Middle School of Duluth. SCCS played Jupiter - Bringer of Joy, Highlights from Harry Potter, and Viva la Vida. We were delighted to be asked to play Viva la Vida a second time with the students from their Chamber Orchestra which rounded out our viola and bass sections. Finally, we performed three more selections together under the direction of Mrs. Hammerschmidt. It was a wonderful experience for our young musicians to meet and perform with new peers. This is the third year of our exchange program with Duluth music programs.
Following the exchange experience, Chamber Director, Erika Hammerschmidt, made arrangements for St. Croix Catholic’s student musicians to attend a Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra Rehearsal. Mrs. Hammerschmidt is a performing member of the Symphony Orchestra. Our young musicians enjoyed a backstage tour, listened to the piano soloist warm-up (for an hour!), observed the musicians and conductor warming up and viewed the symphony hall in its full magnitude from top balcony. In their free time, students thoroughly enjoyed the shores of Lake Superior.
Chamber Ensemble violinist and SCCS 5th grader, Julia Dean shares, “The Duluth trip is a fun way to play with other groups and learn new songs. It is also a really good chance to see professionals play at the Duluth Symphony orchestra! And when we are not playing, we explore Duluth and do fun things like go on hikes down by the lake. We have an awesome teacher Mrs. Hammerschmidt! She is the one who started all of this!"
